• AT&T Fiber - installation questions?

From poindexter FORTRAN@VERT/REALITY to All on Mon Apr 14 07:58:00 2025
I'm looking at AT&T fiber, and I'm curious as to other fiber users what
    your experience has been.

How well did they run the fiber into your house?

Is the box they hand off the fiber to interior or exterior? Do you get
to choose? From what I understand, they can either put a powered ONT on
the outside of the house and deliver copper into the house, or bring
fiber in and use an interior ONT, then hand off copper to their modem. I
have a copper terminating block that's near a protected power plug, I
could run the wire from a wall wart to an external ONT easily.

Do they do a pre-install visit/survey to let you know their options?

Did they run cabling inside of interior walls, or just poke through
    where they could?

I have a couple of challenges - moving trucks keep knocking down my
neighbor's fiber because they hang so low (the pole is across the
street). I think I have a better chance because my copper coming in is
at a flatter angle, and it's never been taken down.

They would need to come in at the high point of the house and run the
cable down into my office space. The best way to do it would be to run
inside a wall to a wall plate.

I'm wondering how flexible they'd be in running cable inside, or if I
should bring in my cabling guy - and if so, how I would ask him to leave
the cabling for AT&T to take over.

I've had fiber internet for almost the last 10 years, thought not from AT&T. When I first got it, I was living in a house that already had an ONT on the outside, and there was an ethernet port from the ONT going to inside one of the rooms of the house. The fiber company may have been the ones that ran the ethernet cable (along the outside of the house) to the ethernet port inside.

I'm currently living in an apartment, using fiber from the same company, and the ONT is on the inside (in one of the bedroom closets). The ONT was also already here when I moved in.

The fiber company doesn't have a modem, just an ONT, and you can plug a router into the ONT via the ethernet connection. The fiber company can let you lease a router, or you can buy your own router and use that (which is what I'm doing).

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to ask them what they'd do for the installation and see how flexible they'd be.

anybody that does anything in your house is a third party that your provider uses. it varies by area. att techs handle the outside to your box on your house.

just call up your tech support and ask them these questions.

another thing you can do is talk to a utility locator. they would know how shit is done in your area for the most part. they also have access to the records on their laptops.

call the diggers hotline and have them mark up your yard and go talk to them. ---
